Dagorhir Jugger League ___________________________________________________________ Hey guys, A couple of us re-worked the idea of making a uniform set of rules for playing Jugger at events . The basic plan is distributing these rules to our local chapter /unit members for try-outs.That way making it possible for everyone that actually liked the idea to organize their own teams and then be able to play on larger events for the fun of it. Most of the info about the project is here at the National forums: www.dagorhir.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=003869Pax, Ake

By Arashi
The Rules of Jugger (v0.3)
These rules are to be used in conjunction with the approved Daghorhir rule set. All weapons must adhere to Dagorhir standards unless otherwise stated by the rules.
Jugger is a game based on the sport of Jugging from the movie “Blood of Heroes”. The game is played with two teams and a dog skull. The game begins when one person from each team (called the “Quick”) steps to the center of the field to vie for the dog skull after the first stone is thrown. Points are scored when a Quick reaches the opposing end of the field and places the dog skull on a pike.
Rules 1. Set up 1.1. Field 1.1.2. Dimensions are provided on the last page of this rulebook 1.1.3. Field edges must be clearly marked with lime, rope, or in some other way that makes the boundaries immediately obvious to players
1.2. Teams 1.2.1. Each team may consist of no less than five players with no more than ten backup players (two reserve players per position) 1.2.2. Positions 1.2.2.1. The Quick 1.2.2.1.1. The Quick may not wear any armor, nor may they carry any weapons. The Quick is the only player who may carry, move, or even touch the dog skull. There may only be one quick on the field for each team at any time 1.2.2.2. The Enforcers 1.2.2.2.1. (Option 1) An Enforcer may wear armor, though their weapon selection is limited to blue weapons and shields. They may not touch or move the dog skull intentionally. There may only be two Enforcers on the field for each team at any time 1.2.2.2.2. (Option 2) An Enforcer may wear armor, though their weapon selection is limited to blue weapons and shields. They may not touch or move the dog skull intentionally. There may only be three Enforcers on the field for each team at any time 1.2.2.3. The Heavy 1.2.2.3.1. (Option 1) A Heavy may wear armor and may carry either one red weapon or one green weapon at a time. They may not touch or move the dog skull intentionally. There may only be one Heavy on the field for each team at any time 1.2.2.3.2. (Option 2) A Heavy may wear armor and may carry either one red weapon or one green weapon at a time. They may not touch or move the dog skull intentionally. There may only be two Heavies on the field for each team at any time 1.2.2.4. The Chain 1.2.2.4.1. The Chain may wear armor, though their weapons selection is limited to either carrying one flail over 36” or two flails under 36” each. They may not touch or move the dog skull intentionally. There may only be one Chain on the field for each team at any time, though each team must have a chain
1.3. The Dog Skull 1.3.1. The dog skull must vaguely resemble a dog's skull and fit Dagorhir Jugging dog skull dimension specifications (TBA)
1.4. The Pike 1.4.1. The pike must be made of some sort of non- or semi-rigid material to create the appearance of a pike on which the dog skull can be placed
2. Playing the Game 2.1. Time 2.1.1. Stones & the Gong 2.1.1.1. Time during Jugger matches will be kept by throwing stones at a gong. If a gong is not available, time may also be kept by the beat of a drum or, if absolutely necessary, a stopwatch. One stone should be thrown every one and a half seconds A match of Jugger should last for 300 stones
2.2. Gameplay 2.2.1. To begin a match, a herald must place the dog skull in the center of the Jugger field. The Enforcers, Heavies, and the Chain will all line up in their third of the field while the Quicks will stand on either side of the circle. The Quicks will be able to fight for the dog skull as soon at the beat of the first stone 2.2.2. Fighting will be judged and ruled by the standards set forth in the Dagorhir rulebook 2.2.3. Deaths 2.2.3.1. When a player dies they must either kneel with their hand over their head or fall to the ground and look dead. To avoid unnecessary injuries players should also call “Dead!” when they are killed. Dead players must remain dead for five stones starting from the first stone after their death. When a player returns to life they must call “Alive!” before proceeding to hack their opponents to smithereens 2.2.4. Pins 2.2.4.1. Pins are used to keep dead players from resurrecting. The pinned players may still finish counting their stones while the pin is applied 2.2.4.2. A pin is applied to a dead player when a living player touches the striking surface of their weapon on the dead player. The pin is broken as soon as the weapon is removed 2.2.4.3. A player may not hold a pin while they are being attacked 2.2.5. Match Breaks 2.2.5.1 If at any time the herald sounds a whistle play must stop immediately and players must hold their position until a reason is called. The herald will then announce whether or not the players may move. If it is not practical for players to hold position then play will be recommenced at the referees discretion as to starting positions and possession of the skull 2.2.5.2. Matches may be stopped for any reason deemed necessary by the herald. If a player sees an injury they should call a hold to initiate a match break whether or not the herald has seen the injury 2.2.6. Reserve Players 2.2.6.1. Reserve players may be switched in at any point while stones are not being thrown. If a reserve player is switched in during a match break they must resume the position and take the weapon of the player they are replacing 2.2.7. Penalties 2.2.7.1. Penalties may be issued and determined by a herald at any time during a game for any reason. Penalties will be no less than 3 stones and may go so far as to remove a player from the rest of the game

Rock... lets play test these... and why don't we give the chainers like lengths of padded rope or something... Just saying... they're supposed to be like... chains... and stuff...

I've been jugging in Amtgard for almost a decade. The game itself has been run there since the day after the movie was released in theaters in 1989: amtwiki.org/amtwiki/index.php/JuggingI introduced it to the Dag group earlier this year I think on my third week out and everyone loved it. We made a few modifications, like no dagger for the quick, and while it isn't exactly true to the movie (there's no shieldmen in the movie), I feel it brings a certain tactical grace to the game. Most of the MM guys have said they are working with Ragnorok on running a tournament there on Wednesday or something, and I'm recruiting Amtgard people I know will be there to act as heralds. I have no idea how far along they are on this, but we almost ran it last Rag, so I'd hope they're doing pretty well. Whichever rules you use, I wish you luck in forming a league. We've had tons of trouble making leagues work in Amtgard for more than a year at a time. I've been contemplating starting one up in the Midwest, but it'd be incredibly complicated, and I have a fighting unit and two games to focus on. I'll post my ideas, if you're interested, though.

Anyone have a source for the original movie, Salute of the Jugger ? I know they released it in North America as Blood of Hero's, and I've found it on Amazon / Best Buy, etc... But reading reviews say original is better.
Sounds like an awesome game though.

As a contrast check the Dragonspire boards for the rules to Brogas ball. It was inspired by the movie but departs from it in several ways to keep it sinple. There was some debate as to how true to the movie the game should be. Now is our chance to see.

Brogas ball is fine, but aren't we trying to re-create the sport of jugging?

Since we were trying to keep the Dag Jugger rules as Dagorhirish as possible we kind of change the chain ...because is not Dag leagl. But it is a demented idea I m going trying to make one anyway!!!Maybe a bag flail with a lot more cloth chain? What they use on the Liga is one of those plastic links chains with foam sections for protection. Here is a frakk up video of us playing, most of it is one of our jugger games ;the beginning and the end...the middle is part of the Dag practice, I messed up when cutting the video clip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=99vmxb4VNPAAke

We salute you jugger, Good to meet a vet.I new I had heard of jugger on Dag and other systems before. We have friends in spain which may have gotten recognition from the german Liga and some guys from Costa Rica just contacted us. Istvan ,Hammaren Hjarta and Arashi have been working on the rules since I started a thread on the national forums, so watching jugger on Rag may become a next reality. Att Ake I've been jugging in Amtgard for almost a decade. Ooooh yess I forget about that....I guess these look not much different than the ones used in Dagorhir ages ago...but that is just crazy, I like it.Only problem it wouldn t be Dag leagl...I also wonder what they use for the ball....that long chain creates much more momentum. Ake
