My character seems to be taking on an Eastern flavor and I'm designing my garb accordingly. I know stylistically it need only be period-accurate, there seems to be little concern over cloths used, but I would like to wear a robe something like this. My wonder about the legality comes from the fact that the arms are so ....big and flowing. It's garb, not armor, but I wonder about the ruling Any insights? For that matter, should I also avoid any sort of cloth streamers on future swords? I know they're impractical, without purpose, and will likely tear out the first time they touch the ground and get stepped on.... but they're just so darn pretty and wouldn't be at all difficult (or expensive) to replace. ooohhh pretty

Robes are fine, the only thing you want to watch is that you don't create a rhino hiding senario where they cann't hit you because they catch your cloths long before they can ever hit you, some cloaks and coats can give this problem.
The cloth on the sword shouldn't be a problem either really, I'd just make them short so they can not wrap around someone. If there is a problem with them they can always be removed with little trouble.

Yeah...the cloth on the sword is absolutely unnecessary and will probably rip off anyway...but for the first 3 minutes or so it would look nice.

Here's a decent representation of what I'm looking at....maybe 1/2 to a maximum of 3/4 of the sleeve width shown here though. Is this too much that it would be considered the "rhino hiding scenario" mentionde earlier? I don't intend to wrap someone's sword with it but is it *TOO* much cloth that it would be considered unfair if not hazardous? The nat'l board indicated that the period-correct dagger and cloak style is not allowed...so I guess the question at this point is...how much garb is too much?

It's an individual basis really. If you are fighting and you have to call garb all the time because the sword can't get to you, then it may be too much garb. The real point here is if you wear stuff that's big and flowy, don't use it as armor. There's no way for it to be illegal really, so just be responsible with it and it will be fine.

Haha, if you do go through with it though, again I say I might have to hunt you down and kill you first.

You had best pray your approach will be silent and from behind, lest I see you and have your head.

Edna: It will be bold! Dramatic! Bob: Yeah! Edna: Heroic! Bob: Yeah. Something classic - like Dynaguy. Oh, he had a great look! Oh, the cape and the boots... Edna: [throws a wadded ball of paper at Bob's head] No capes! Bob: Isn't that my decision? Edna: Do you remember Thunderhead? Tall, storm powers? Nice man, good with kids. Bob: Listen, E... Edna: November 15th of '58! All was well, another day saved, when? his cape snagged on a missile fin! Bob: Thunderhead was not the brightest bulb... Edna: Stratogale! April 23rd, '57! Cape caught in a jet turbine! Bob: E, you can't generalize about these things... Edna: Metaman, express elevator! Dynaguy, snag on takeoff! Splashdown, sucked into a vortex! [shouts] Edna: No capes! As you can see... Capes! They are soooo cooolll! But... as in the case of your robe idea... frought with draw backs... kind of like oversized monk sleeves.... I agree with Edna... (but Batman with no cape??? how un-cool)... you may choose to do as you will... and I'll try and refrain from any... "I told you" so's. ;D ;D

At this point I'm willing to chalk up the "I-told-you-so's" to "lack-of-experience" And you're hitting the nail right on the head...it's bold, dramatic and completely unnecessary. But as I've heard others say, Dagorhir is 90% style (right Alric? Just like it's 95% fun and 5% winning? Which so far gives us a total 190%) ;D Cloth isn't expensive so I'm not out too terribly much, and I can always fight shirtless if not just make a more appropriate shirt. I'd like to try it out and see how things go though, just because it fits my character (and there are still appropriate alternatives to stay character-correct). My major concern was the legality issue...I think I can learn to fight in it unless it's just too utterly impractical. If nothing else, I'll have some nice off the field garb.

I think it would be legal so long as:
1. It didn't hide any armor. 2. It didn't prevent weapons from striking you.

Capes are cool and all, but after doing this for a few years, which still makes me a veritable toddler among giants, I've pretty much stripped my garb down to brutal functionality.
You'll fight a battle or two with the cape and streamers, and never want to do it again. They're restrictive, and make you stand out in the crowd.
Having said that, I keep one on hand for situations where you need to be immediately recognizable on the field, i.e. formation leader, things like that. Having a distinctive helmet helps with that too.

Finishing it up tomorrow. It's pretty much coming together as an ankle-length tabbard with sleeves. Pretty easy to move in but not yet battle-tested...

Well, I just finished (Yes, I know it's 3am...). Grandma did a little bit of work on it when I picked it up Friday from her house, but it's all pretty much still my handiwork. Added a few little flares on the sleeves (nothing too extravegant, but it needed a little more flavor).
Alric, I expect to see you Sunday evening so you can check my stuff out.

Hahaha. Today we were battling in full gear. The thing with my garb is that when I dodge, the robe doesn't necessarily follow my body immediately. However, it's light enough that it wasn't slowing down or catching on any swords. I'm sure eventually someone will swing (or stab) just right and go inside the sleeve but I'll worry about it when it becomes a real hindrance to the fairness of a fight.
And Alric will tell you, I was the prettiest princess on the field today.
