Sui craned his neck and looked at the roof of the hut.
"Mountjoy!" he exulted; the roof was made of thatch!
"Nichtmar, can you give a boost up to the ceiling? I think I can find a way out."
Balancing himself on Nichtmar's broad shoulders, Sui grabbed onto on of the rough hewn rafters and hauled himself up. Every tired muscle in his body ached with the strain, but gritting his teeth he pushed himself into the thatch.
After a few minutes of burrowing into the thatch he poked his head out cautiously into the afternoon sun. Around him was a camp filled with red armored soldiers and the hut was surrounded by sentries.
"Guess I'll have to wait till dark."

Nichtmar’s thoughts grow weary of hope. He has seen much death in his short time in Mittelmarch, his head is clouded of the worth of it all. The faces of those he has killed echo in his mind. Nichtmar lets Suihaden drop to the ground. He grabs Sui by the tabard and pushes him into the wall. Twigs from the ceiling sprinkle on them.
“Don’t you see…it will never end, we cannot escape you idiot! We have no weapons we are only two… don’t be a fool…”
Nichtmar drops him and turns to the center of their prison. He doesn’t know where it comes from, but images of slashing at Sui’s throat, strangling him enter his mind.
“Stop!” He growls at himself.
His hands tremble from the hate that burns inside him. He takes deep breath of the crisp air, and drops to his knees.
“We will wait boy…”
“Dunland is close…maybe they heard of our troubles…”

As the patrol of Jovians approach the woodline it seems as if a hush falls over the world. Anvil feels that old feeling before a battle of dread and excitement and all of his senses seem to heighten. Watching from his vantage point hidden in the woods and calming his horse he waits for the archers to start the dance of death. Moments before the bows twang their deadly song of death the leader of the Jovian patrol seems to pause and then react, perhaps it was the quiteness of the woods, perhaps a sense born out of countless battles to react to danger before it appears, maybe a careless flash of steel. Whatever the reason he slipped to a position of riding on the side of his mount and spurred it on while calling out to his men. Many of his men reacted nearly as quickly as he did, many but not all. A volley of arrows whistle in from the woods and find many a Jovian or his horse. The two wagon riders were dead before they hit the ground, and half the mounted patrol was down due to wounds or becouse they lost their mounts. Anvil notes that half a dozen are still mounted and riding hard toward his position, trying to outrun the ambush and either regroup to attack or ride on to get re-enforcements. Anvil didn't care which it was for he intended to keep them from their current plans. Urging his mount to quick action Anvil gauges the speed of the oncoming riders and aims his horse towards the lead rider. The horse senses the upcoming move, it has performed it before. The mountain ponies of Dunland have been trained to slam into larger foes like trolls and giants to knock them over, it knows it's master plans on becoming a projectile aimed at the heart of his target.

The Jovians who survived the intial volley of arrows and found themselves horseless quickly recover and take cover behind the wagon as they draw weapons and reform. Anvil's mount slams into the lead Jovian's horse as the that small group tries to put distance between them selves and the archers. The result ends in both animals going to ground and the riders of both roll away to avoid the falling animals. Two more of the Jovians find themselves dismounted as their animals collide with the mass of horses suddenly in front of them. As Anvil gets to his feet and avoids the incoming mass of man and horse flesh tumbling around him. A single jovian falls prone in front of Anvil and without thought Anvil drives the edge of his shield into the mans exposed throat silencing him forever more in this world. Anvil sees the first rider has advanced upon him in the confusion and Anvil tries to parry the first swing at his head by the Jovian. The parry misses but the sword finds Anvil's arm and bracer instead of his head. The blow is powerful and cleaves into the armor and bites into the flesh below. The initial pain and surprise causes him to drop his sword but he swings his shield around and drives into the man they both fall over a horse trying to regain it's feet.

As Anvil and his group cut off the escaping Jovians the group left behind hear the war cry of several warriors in the woods from the side the arrow volley came from. As they look in that direction they see several warriors coming through the trees towards them. Greybeard and his group have been waiting for this for it signals the end of the arrow volleys and they prepare to move into the rear of the exposed Jovians.
