Part One
I Have been many things, and I shall be many more....
I came into the world as any other, through pain and blood. But my coming was a thing of sorrow. I was a secret my mother had kept from even him, he who she loved with all her heart. For my father looked upon my swaddled form and knew I was not of his blood, but a bastard from the Northman some months before. He snatched me up and made for the sea, from wince they came in their long ships, he was destined to return me. It was my mothers pleading, her tired and bleeding form crawling after him that stayed his hand, for fate had other plans for me.
And thus I grew, a fair haired and fair eyed child, under the dark eyes of the one whom I called father. I learned to scratch a living from the rocky soil of the land and lived the simple life of the village people. It was so long ago I remember not their faces.
When I was ten summers, he came for me. For some time he stood among the mists, letting the village know he was there. He was taller than the tallest man, his hair shining like spun gold and eyes blue as the sky. He was unlike anything I had seen at the time, wearing a shirt of metal rings that glistened in the morning light and carrying an axe that was for hewing flesh and not wood.
Then he spoke in a rough voice, slurring his words in an odd way. “I have come for the boy.”
There were no other words spoken and no tears. He who was my father only nodded and walked me out of the house. I turned away from the village that had raised me, not knowing who this man was, but knowing somehow that I was of his blood. For three days we traveled on foot into the mists. It was farther than I had ever been, and I took care where I stepped, for I feared of stepping off the edge of the world.
On the third night when we camped the man turned to me and spoke. “ Remember I have chosen you to be my son, and thus I send you into the world among my people.” With this I laid my head upon the ground and drifted off to sleep.
I awoke to the cawing of ravens, and though I searched through the thick mist, I found no sign of the man who had brought me here. For a day I wondered, fearful of being devoured by monsters lurking in the mist, and the ever present ravens giving me no comfort. Hunger began to eat away at my belly.
The next day I smelled smoke and cooked meat. The mist began to clear and I saw men around a fire. Fear fought the hunger and it was night before I stole into their camp to gnaw upon the bones of their meal. For a week I followed them, eating their scraps at night.
Then I was caught.
He grabbed me by the neck and pulled me up like a pup. I kicked and bite, and somehow I managed to free his dagger from his belt and plunge it into his arm. The others laughed at this, and joke that he had finally caught the sly little wolf.
