Swords of Destiny
The Goblin and Orc army pillaged and ransacked every home they came in contact with, spreading the fires as they went. The smoke rose up into the sky and could be seen miles away.
The young Dark-Elf Aubrey Icecarver saw the smoke from afar in the Wood of Orford, where he was looking for the doe he had been tracking all day. As he stared at the rising column of charcoal grey smoke, he was stricken with fear as he realized what was happening. He turned for home forgetting everything that had been in his mind two minutes earlier. Then as he reached the butte of a hill, that overlooked the forest, he saw them. Great hordes of goblins and orcs controlled my trolls and ogres, marching toward his town of Eilthor.
Aubrey knew that he would not reach Eilthor in time to warn the people , yet he kept on running in vain. A sudden light, that came from a few ten-yards away, blinded him so that his entire vision with a brilliant white light. Time seemed to float away like a mist that disappears on a chilly spring morning. After what seemed to have been an entire life time of white light, Aubrey awoke to a find himself laying down in a bedroll next to a fire.
“Would you like some mutton and ale young lad?” came a booming voice from across the fire.
Aubrey sat up as fast as he could, and moved around the fire slowly to see from what the voice had come from. As the figure came into a clear line of sight, Dufr stared in amazement as he saw what the voice had come from.
“The names Regis Stonehammer. Have a seat and share this excellent mutton with me.”
Dufr continued to stare in awe for the voice had come from a dwarf. And if you didn’t know dwarfs are even more rarely seen than elves. Some people even thought that dwarves were a children’s tale made up to get young ones to bed.
“Uhh suurree.”Said Aubrey awkwardly as he sat across from the dwarf. After giving Aubrey a plate, Regis pulled out a map and started mumbling to himself.
“Damn ogres and trolls. That’s what we need to take out first. They hold the whole damn army together with their whips.”
By this time Aubrey was thoroughly interested in what the dwarf was talking about, for he faintly remembered something about ogres and trolls.
“Excuse me for asking, but what are you talking about?” asked Aubrey.
“Why don’t you know?” exclaimed Regis,” The tribes of goblins and orcs have banded together under a powerful mage who is sweeping over the north and burning towns and villages and claiming it as his empire. As for my part I am King Fireforge’s third cousin once removed and Captain of the Royal Guard, and I have been sent to scout out the movement s of the tribes of orcs, goblins, ogres, and trolls.”
As Regis was saying all of this, Aubrey remembered how he had gotten to the woods and what he was doing before that bright light. As suddenly as he had gotten up the first time, Aubrey jumped up and was about to start running toward Eilthor, when Regis grabbed him by the leg and yanked him back down.
“You would be wise to keep those long legs of yours in this camp or you’ll be surely caught by goblins or orcs and tortured until they’ve decided that they’ve had enough fun and tear off a leg to enjoy after their meal of horse meat.” came Regis’ explanation of why he grabbed Dufr’s leg. “And why is it that you are so eager to run off so early after our meeting? Was it something I said?”
“No, no it’s just that that great army of goblins and orcs were heading toward my town. I have to go see if my family is ok.”
“I understand that you want to find them, but you would not get very near your town at this time of night for this is when goblins are at their best, during the dead of night. Wait until morning young …what was your name?”
“Aubrey…Aubrey Icecarver. Son of Beorg of Eilthor.”
“Well then Aubrey Icecarver of Eilthor, wait until morning to check on your family. If you wait I will accompany you to this town of yours. Do we have a deal young Aubrey?”
“Alright but we’ll leave as soon as the sun is up.”
“Agreed.” Was Regis’ reply.
Having come to an agreement they went to bed, but not a very comfortable one for Aubrey, for he was constantly being awakened by strange dreams of a white light and a magnificent sword glowing out of the bushes next to a stream.
