War hammer advise: Pay close attention to balance and how much foam you use in the head. The mass of such weapons tends to make them hit harder than they really should. Good counter balancing can help alleviate that a bit.
Scythes are not expressly forbidden, but I've seen dozens of people try and never seen a good one made. If he wants to do it, more power to him, but it will likely be a waste of time.

A comment about the kama's. Don't.
Seriously, it will end up being a waste of time and foam. Trust me.
I've tried making a kama before, but there were a few problems with it that are pretty much impossible to get around barrring REALLY good foamsmithing skills and luck:
1. Due to the nature of the weapon, the 'blade' must be long and perpendicular to the haft. This means that when you try and hit someone with it, there is a good chance that your kama will just turn in your hand and do nothing.
2. The flip side, is if it does manage to hit solidly, the fact that it's a very small striking surface, being a point, means that it will hit incredibly hard for a weapon of it's type. This will make it rather difficult to make a safe kama without using advanced foam tech and the like, which I'm guessing you might not have too much experience in.
Personally, I think you guys should try your hand at building a blue sword or two and see how you guys like building those before moving on to bigger things. It will teach the basics of foamsmithing, teach you how to use Dap, and make that eventual warhammer that much safer and better looking when you get to it.

At Battle of Five Armies there was a local running around with a kama looking thing; he had put the blade at a 45degree angle to the haft. So I guess it was more of a curved short sword with the striking being the inside curve.
For your hammer: Are you thinking of making a layered box (so the end result is sort of square headed) or a barrel hammer (with the end being round)?

Ahh, ok. There was a tutorial floating around about boxed hammers; I'll see if i can find it tonight. Basically built boxes on the core until it was the desired dimensions then put 3-4 blue layers on striking and then 2" of open cell over that. Cover and add haft padding.

I have no idea what kind of foam comes out of life jackets, but I would be wary of using that. Go to a Wal-Mart and get the blue camping pads, Ozark Trails brand. That's the bread and butter foam for Dag. Also, lots of duct tape is not really a good way to go especially if you're making a hammer. It'll add too much extra weight, methinks.

yea.. the axe he made is heavy... but without glue... its all we got right now. i prolly wont bring it to practice unless i think its good. but it still has to get past the weapon check. its no were leagal right now but its are first weapons. when we get better stuff well make better equipment.
