im planning on getting leather soon so i can start making armour. hopefully getting it done before the O's. i checked out tandy leather online and there are so many different kinds and they're messured in ounces. what kind do most people use with they're armour and what would the ounce be for that so i dont get to thick of leather? i'm going to go into the store to buy it but i need to know about how much i need to save and what im actually looking for once i go there.

I believe that the Saddle Skirting is the "gold standard' right now. www.tandyleatherfactory.com/home/department/Leather/Saddle-Skirting/9047-02.aspx?feature=Product_1 And right now it's on sale @ $85 a side....yes you have to buy the whole side. You won't be able to use the whole thing as armor though, it does tend to taper to a thinner thickness towards the edges. The piece we bought, I'd imagine is 80% usable though. There will be some cuts - gouges - brands - scars and that ilk on the hide, you can work around it or just avoid them. Digging through them by hand in store is DEFIANTLY worth it. We unrolled probably 10 before we decided on one that looked the best. Couple of us up here are wanting to go down to Tandy soon and buy some more supplies, hit me up on AIM or shoot off an Email...or post up on the Kanthea boards about when your going, we'll see if we can meet ya down there.

thanks stubbie. i'll probably do that. it'll be in like maybe 2 weeks when i get my next check. the other question is which would be better: getting predyed black leather or getting a regular tanned leather and just getting a bottle of black dye? my entire armour is going to be solid black with a silver outline around it.

Not a problem. I honestly dunno on the dyeing aspect, we are still working on that ourselves. I know the black pieces we have dyed have came out alright, still working on getting a good shade of Ox Blood or Green though.
If you run the Saddle Skirt side route, you'll have to dye it yourself. Probably be your cheapest route too.

yea i thought that it would be cheaper and right now that's the way i need to go. but i figured if i dye it enough times it'll come out the way i want which shouldn't be to hard, just time consuming.

Well I dunno how black your wanting but....the "USMC Black" dye we bought only needed 1 coat to be very black. It was a matte black, so if you wanted shiny, have to polish it.

yea i kinda figured that. not sure yet if i want shiny yet or not. the really only shiny is going to be the silver outline but other than that just a really black armour is what im going for.

I'm just gonna throw this out here. If you wind up with any scraps that are armour legal, I'll take them off your hands.

Hey cathan, its also been suggested to me before you can buy very thin couch leather, place a metal washer between two pieces of couch leather and eather rivet or sew them together and you have essentially a brigandine plate. Repeat the process to make a lot of plates that you can put together for a full suit of scale brig

There are two ways to color leather. You can die it and you can use paint. Obviously you want to use leather die and paint that works well with leather. Also you will want to use a sealant on the leather once you are done.
Once your practices start back up I plan on coming out a good bit and can bring some of my leather working stuff out or can give a hand in the next few weeks if anyone want to get together.
Thank you,
Azmandius
