A-bwah?!? ...So I was thinking about how awesome Samurai look driving home from work the other night, and the one really 1337 thing about wandering Samurai is the hat. Y'know, those really cool peasant/farmer hats made of like straw (or sometimes bamboo)... Really wide brim. I figured out what they're called: JingasaThen I thought, "Man, wish I had one of those. I could look really cool or think I did. But what if..." And thus, my tired kinda sleep-deprived brain began thinking on the topic of... A Shield-hat. For all passing purposes, it would be a legal shield--probably coreless due to its conical nature. It would have a handle like any other coreless shield, but it would also have straps or something to rest it on the head. I know back-shields work, and basically anywhere you can carry a shield should be legal to carry a shield on. It could act as a helmet for arrow blocking and suddenly... Whappoooshah! It is removed and used to deflect an incoming sword attack, thus confusing the opponent and looking totally cool. So, what do you think, totally awesome or totally stupid, but Faydh should still try it?

I'm not sure on the actual ruling on this, but I belive it would be ok. I belive the only rule is you may only carry one shield into battle. One of the more experienced people please correct me if I'm wrong though. If no one knows we may just have to ask on the national boards. Creative idea though.
Upon looking I believe this rule would apply which makes it legal.
3.5.3. A shield is a shield is a shield. Meaning that a shield maybe used in any manner, and it will still remain a shield.
My only worry is that if someone goes to break it with a red and it is on your head.

maybe you could do what that guy in mortal kombat did and make it a throwing weapon

you could use a shield as a hat, but do you really want the weight and instability?
Baethor... you can't have any rigid core in a throwing weapon... even shieldfoam would be too hard to use for that.
PS... this is Dhugal

Good call on both accounts Dhugal. Thanks for responding. I really have no experience with something of this sort to give much advice on it.

It would be fine as far as the rules, but I would be hesitant to let someone block a blow with his head. If you're gonna be removing the shield from your head, you'll be fine.

Thanks for posting what my original intention was Zaron. I tried to go in and clarify my intent of the shield-hat, but my cookies signed me out of the national boards, and I can't get my password back.
(I ever mention how much I hate Norton Antivirus?)
Could someone post on my behalf that my intention with the shield hat would be to have it on your had as a sort of easy (maybe?) way to store a shield when using something that required both hands like archery or a big two-hander. Then it could be switched out to use as a shield when the need arises. Or I guess, it would have a little bit of a surprise factor. Your opponent sees you without a shield and thinks your easy-pickings, then you pull that hat off your had and laugh at them. (Killing them and surviving optional)

As was stated on the National boards:
A shield is a valid target for my red mace (see Crazy Eddie's Hous of Big-Ass Maces to see it), no matter where it is held. Now, I wouldn't do that, but not everyone is as bright as a thumbtack. It causes safety issues because of that and while nothing specific is in the rules about what you want, it automatically fails on safety, meaning no you cannot do it.

Zaron or someone, can you mention that the shield-hat being covered in cloth would distinguish it from metal or leather helms?

Sure, you can mention it as well. The national boards are for eveyrone in Dag.

It still remains unsafe and therefore fails

I'd have to agree with Dhugal and everyone else
-BUT-
That doesnt mean you can still make it and wear it off the field or before battles start to keep the sun off your head, just make sure you take it off before the fight starts. If they didnt allow that, then I couldnt do have the stuff I do before a fight start.

No, Z. Can you yourself mention it (I meant.) I can't log in to the national boards... Oh well, It doesn't really matter now though.
Still, a Jingasa would be cool to have regardless of armor/shield status because they look totally uber.

Ah, I misunderstood his post first time I read it... Now I understand.
<foot + head = kick in the head>

Making it so you could wear it as you were going to the field or off the field would be perfectly fine. Just not on the head on the field.

Well, I always thought that "head shots" where illegal, so I'm not sure what you hope to gain (other than constant snickers behind your back) by waring it.

that is exactly it Greybeard,. but let me add this:
while head shots are illegal, blows to shields are legal, that is why it is unsafe and therefore wouldn't pass
