the whole reason i started this thread was cause i was talking with my dad about making weapons and i asked "where do you think they sell camping foam at instead of Walmart" and then he asked "what kind of foam" So like what kind of foam should be used for weapons? like the the foam camping mats that they sell at like target or do you have to buy the Oh so Holy foam from Walmart that i hear about all the time on here

I think Alric once showed me a weapon he had that was made of a roll from Target...I guess it was different enough that it broke down more quickly and just didn't hold up like the Walmart brand.

Storm, the white foam that I have crafted several shields from, and that those in the know from Mittlemarch covet so... is a closed cell packing foam. the process of making it traps many air bubbles in the foam, allowing it to remain suprisingly light and flexible. Both important qualities when shipping fragile items cross country, or around the world. This foam does not absorb water like open cell foam (coach foam) and holds up suprizingly well, I have a 6 year old shield that still passes inspection. Maxyor of Eryndor has access to a simmilar foam that is blue, and not quite as rigid as the white foam I use. the blue foam is an inch thinner, which can make handle insertion tricky, and usually requires the addition of a layer of blue foam to the front, and sied of the shield. Perhaps by gluing two sheets together, one can address these issues, but the added weight may not prove as weildable. Hope that little diatribe was in some way helpful... Oron the Wolf

Thanks Oron. I would suggest making your first shields our of Maxyor's foam as the source of it is close by (Ft. Wayne), it costs alot less, and I can show you how to insert the handle.
After you get a design and size to your liking then I would make it out of the white packing foam as although it costs more the extra durability is well worth it when you know what you want.
That's what I did and I know that's what Beathor did. It's like building swords, there is much more expensive although better foams for the blades, but make sure your construction and technique is good before spending out the extra money.
