That is a really broad question. There are many different kinds of armor and different materials, not to mention body zones.
Leather: Least expensive to make. Has to be at least 3/16" thick. Doesn't breath vary well, but much lighter than chain, metal plate armor, or most brigandine armor.
Metal Plate: Most expensive and time consuming to make. Fairly heavy. Takes a lot of practice and involves lots of hammering. Needs to be at least 18 guage of whatever period metal (iron, steel, copper, bronze, brass, titanium). Looks AMAZING when done right and will last pretty much forever.
Metal Rings: Chain mail. Reallllllly time consuming. Fairly heavy. Individual rings made out of at least 18 guage metal wire. There are a lot of patterns of ring sequence to choose from for different strenghts and appearances. Again, this take a lot of practice but is really cool when complete.
Brigandine: Metal or heavy leather plates on a cloth or leather backing. Medium weight. Fairly easy to make if you have access to the materials. Plates have to be a maximum of 1/2" apart. Plan on using lots of rivets. This is what my armor is.
There are also other hybrid armors than those listed, such as Ring Mail, which uses large, thick metal rings and scale mail. Once you figure out the type of armor you want, find someone in the realm who has that style and talk to them personnally about their preferences and techniques. Be sure to double check the rules on the main dagorhir website before you build anything though. It sucks to invest a lot of time and money in something to find out that it won't pass inspection.
