Hi All,
I don't have a lot of interest in making this stuff, but assuming I try it and like it, I would most likely want to pay someone local to make items I could use.
Is anyone interested in doing this, and if so, would you kindly send me a price list for your services on each of the items you can craft? I see myself interested in 2 blue swords (w/green tips), a red sword (w/green tip), a shield, each of the armor parts, and garb for a start...I realize there are a lot of variables, so ballpark ideas of cost would be great. I believe I want fiberglass vs. pvc cores for my weapons.
Email for this info: drhelfer@iupui.edu
Thanks!
Felix

Oooo....Greek. Love it. It's too bad we can't have full-face helms. You might get away with this, though: Alric

One thing to remember is that even the most well crafted green swords need repaired once every couple of months, so if your not going to work on them yourself you may want to get a set without the stabbing tips for practice and only use the ones with stabbing tips at events.
One other note is it's hard to give an estimate with fiberglass core swords (especially red) as there are a ton of different core types. The two fiberglass driveway markers for blues is relatively cheap, but some of the strong/light fiberglass for reds can get abit expensive and varies wildly depending on exactly what lenght/weight you want.

Understood. At first opportunity I would like to take a look at a variety of weapons to see what 'works' best for me.

You can ALWAYS get away with the Corinthian helm. In fact, I've never seen a helm to fail, to be honest...one of these days I'll buy the helm from Gladiator, and see if anyone notices.
P.S. Where's the rule about full-face helms?

5.1.3. Helmets and neck armor protect from yellow/white weapon hits to the head and neck when worn on the head. 5.1.14. Rigid armor including helmets must not protrude more than 0.5-inch from the body. 5.1.15. Rigid armor including helmets must have no points (must be penny round).
5.1.16. Rigid armor including helmets must have blunted edges.
thats all i saw about helms...nothing aginst faces...I plan on having one thats leatyher that chiefly protects my face and has my dreads popping outta the top all awesome!

I was looking at the "great helm" and I think it passes.... But I've fought in a great helm... back in St. Louis a buddy had one... Three significant draw backs... A. It's heavy and it chaffs agaisnt your collar bones, knocking them pretty hard. B. You can't hear much but your own breathing. C. Your vision is severly limited.... You must constantly be scanning the feild, but even them you will miss the obvious. Looks Cool.... but I would never have worn one to battle again after using it three or four times... Bye the bye... didn't you see the one guy at Rag last year with the form fitting leather molded "Skull" face. it even had an articulated jaw.... full face protection but not many drawbacks... very cool. All you really need I decided is enough healm to keep your skull from getting cracked and enough defence to keep your schnoz from getting stripped off your face. The Gladiator Helmet I think has the best of all worlds even protecting the mouth while not covering it and forcing the warer to re-breath his hot, damp, carbon di-oxide laidened breath. The ear is open but resessed and most important the eyes are wide and near the face... Too bad it's "The Gladiator" helm. Too recognisable as "less than the battlefield" kind of helmet, when in my opinion that's here it belongs.

The thing about the Gladiator helm is that it would be with the realm of legality if it was just a smooth skullcap from the eyebrows back to the neck guard. It's the pointy embellishments that make it bad. Finding someone who can make a smoother version of that helm would make my day.

So I found an entire Unit devoted to Sparta. They are required to garb as Spartans, and I've asked their help and advice as far as Spartan garb goes. Sparta of AngaronAlric

The ruling (though not in the MOA) is that -metal- helmets cannot have enclosed faces. This is mostly (I believe) for issues of collision safety (think accidental head butts), and also in the event the combatant wearing the helm is unconcious, having a metal covering over the face can make it hard to remove (or so I have been told). There isn't really a solid definition of what covers too much though. I havn't seen helmets fail for it personally, but I know Dominus had a helm that failed under the ruling before aquiring his current one. So, helmets have failed for it. Since there is no set-in-stone guideline, however, I think it tends to be up to the discretion of the armor checker. Leather, however, can be enclosed, covering the whole head if you want.

I think that applies to all leather armor, regardless of location.

Before you spend any money on weapons or garb you should really try it out for a few weeks. Better yet make it to an event as well. You will spend alot of money with this sport, especially if you are not willing to make any of it.
For spartan specific garb you really need to go thru a vendor, especially if you want fancy.
I do most of the sewing here but when it came to my own fancier garb, I just went to ebay and put in SCA garb.
Thicker materials run you $7-$18 a yard, then there is the trim at $4 and up a yard. Then buttons, symbols, ect cost extra for detailing. Then there is the labor for detailed work. Unless you have a friend willing to work for free or cheap......

I work for cheap but not free, and i dont live onthe same side of town as you apperently so our trading would have to be at practices or events. Alot of people do that though, cause a good customizer is kinda hard to find i guess. I havent done alot of armor leather work, i mostly do cloth. PM me if u have any ideas on what you want for starter garb, like Keyna said start simple and try it out before you get too detailed and spend alot.

Thanks for the additional tips gang. I realize there are costs involved...so send me some for finished garb/gear if you are interested, please.
Jin, where do you get your grills? I think I have the skills needed to make them. You don't happen to have stone models of your dental arches, do you?

Thanks for offering though.
