Smith-types, So, I'm a long time boffer fighter, and I've been considering coming out to Olympics to see what Dagorhir is like. I do have a bit of an equipment question, though, regarding a riveted chainmail shirt I have that happens to be made of something... well, shall we say, pop-can like? It is 14 gauge riveted, and works quite well for fending off lawn furniture (rattan). Specifically, I'm wondering if I should bring this out with me and see if people will look past the material and focus on the rivets and tight weave and let it count, or just bring something else. As to weaponry, I have a cloth-covered sword from a weapons maker called Iron Liege that I use in some of the events I participate in, and I wanted to know if there's any chance it will pass. Here's a picture and a link to the foamsmiths in question. ironliege.com/SwordsST.htmlNOTE: the black surface in the picture is cloth; the gray line is airbrusing. Only the crossguard and the body of the pommel (not the actual butt) are not covered with cloth.I guess my biggest concern in regards to Dagorhir rules is with the diameter of the tip... Alternately, I could just glue some funnoodle to a piece of kiterod, cut it to a blade shape, and pull a soccer sock over it... but I'm rather fond of my Iron Liege katana. I also have a kiterod pole arm spear made with flat-cut funnoodle and a stress-ball thrusting tip. I was thinking of just tying a green sock over the end. Will that likely pass? Finally, I have a bucket/very large quiver of boffer arrows I use at a LARP in Ohio. Is wrapping the heads in yellow tights/pantyhose likely sufficient to meet your cloth-cover requirement? with thanks for any help, Austin persona name not yet decided

Austin - If you can, bring everything you have to the Os. The latex weaponry won't pass, and Funnoodle on kitespar almost never passes Dagorhir specs, but there will be more than enough weapons for you to borrow, and it'd be great to see what you have.
If your arrows are soft enough, I see no problem with tights or pantyhose as a cover.

The funoodle swords generally are more amptgard-ish and wont hold up with our fighting style either, were full contact so the funoodle pops loose very easily. The latex weapons also break down pretty quick, and with the force we swing at STING like a MOTHER! as for armour, we actually do look more towards the materials of the armour. I dont know the specifics for chain, but bring it along, and see what the armour checkers say. Even if it doesnt pass, i'm sure it'll look cool to fight in.

Besides, you can beat on most of us all day with a 'pixy-stick' (funnoodle) and I for one wouldn't feel it. You would have to swing hard enough to brake it before some of us would notice or take the shot. I don't usually get accused of "Rino-hidding" but when I played agaisnt those Ampgard weapons people will accuse me of 'blowing off shots'. It's not that I'm doing it intentionally, it's just that they don't hit as hard or as solid as Dag weapons.
POP-TOP shirts look pretty cool... but they don't count as armor. Only Armor counts as armor. I have some nice 'chainmail' that I started from rings made of grey CPVC. It looks Sooo good. But it's plastic... only good for party garb. It might actually be good armor in terms of protection... but it's plastic so it's not 'legal' for the battle field.

I'd love to see some highly detailed weapons on the battle field but I also suggest making a weapon for the Olympics. I cannot tell you how fulfilling it is to wield your own work.

The chain has to be of period materials vai the rules, but you can bring it to wear at the feast as they make really cool garb.
I know the latex weapons won't pass from experience. I know we have some people nationally experimenting with them, but we have yet to figure out a formula that will let us make them safe to swing the way some of us do. (I'd enjoy seeing those though if you bring them, as I love the look of latex weapons)
As for the other weapons. I'd add a layer of blue camping foam from walmart over the kitespar and funoodle and make sure the entire thing meets the under 48" and over 12 oz rule and it should pass fine as a speedbat.
The polearm would have to weight over 24 oz and be over 48" long and pass the hit test, so I'd have to see it to be sure. I will mention that it is very hard to get a shield breaking hit with minimum weight reds though.
The arrows sound fine as long as they don't pass through the 2" template hole and pass the hit test. I've seen plenty of tights used on swords, so using it on arrows would be fine.
Hope that helps some. If you have any other questions or need to talk about specs in detail my number is stickied in the contacts page.

Cool... the heads are made from 2.75" diameter stress balls glued around a fender washer/bolt glued into fiberglass camp shafts, so I don't see an issue with them passing through any sort of 2" template. best, Austin

Certain brands of noodle, or perhaps -a- brand of noodle actually hold up fairly well to dag combat. The problem is that the vast majority of the stuff is total shite for our style of play, and will end up as a failed or broken weapon by the end of a single outing of combat. In general it's better to avoid its use unless you can zero in on the good stuff.
If I were you my other-game-playing friend, I would bring your other stuff, but expect that most of it will not pass with our standards. Different games often lead to completely different styles of construction and development, and most of them simply don't cross over. Off hand the mail won't pass, the latex swords will not pass, and the arrows sound very iffy to me. We're pretty strict about projectiles in Dagorhir as one can get popped in the face by them.
At any rate I hope you can get passed any differences and come out and have a great time with us. Dagorhir is a lot of fun and has some of the best, most fun people I've met from any style of larp/foam combat sport. See ya there.
