Have the focus of a cat and the attention span of a deity. I haven't tried armoring myself, but I know that it's a very long and drawn-out process, so be prepared to put in long hours of work.

Yup. I've got a friend and a younger brother to help, so what with them and a few time saving techniques I got off the internet I'm ready to tackle it.

Rowan of the dragoons makes very good chainmail, he's larped for many years. After you get a rythem going knitting them, he says its no big deal, he watches TV while he does it. Talk to him for better advice

I just remember to check the rules before you start to make sure all your hard work will end up with legal armor.

Ok I've checked the rules and I'm making some legal 16 gauge mail. I'm making some progress, I have a patch of mail for the front of the coat that is 14" long and 2" wide. I'll put a pic of it on later. TY for the help guys

I started messing around with chain mail recently. I can not see myself making full pieces of armor but want to fill in my open spots in my current armor. I stopped, realizing that the rules weren’t clear on the ring size being an outer diameter or inner diameter. I was making my own rings so this would reflect my coil making jig. I bought various diameter rods for my jig but did not pursue making anything since. As it goes with me my attentions turned somewhere else and the chain mail idea went to the back of the line. Reading this topic made me think of it so I figured I would ask about the diameter question. So if any knows I would appreciate it.

I've knitted some chain from 3/4" grey PVC... The Look is AWSOME! Totally NOT legal... too bad... because it does LOOK very very cool.

And it makes great feast garb too. I know I love my chain, but I don't see myself wearing it for very many feasts.

buy 16g wire and a 1/4 inch dowel rod, wrap the dowel rod in the wire and cut the links apart

I am confused... 5.2.2. The minimum thickness of non-plate metal armor is 16-gauge.
But the chart goes from 12g-18g in Dag rules figure 5.2.4.
So would 17g Galv.Steel work?

more than likely it would be accepted if it was a 1/4inch diameter, honestly not sure if it'd be legal though, you bring up a good point.

Also I was wondering, when you say X gauge can be no larger than X" diameter, is that refering to the Inner diameter of the ring or the Outter diameter?

Question, on the DagRule Test page it states
5.2.3 - The minimum thickness wire for chain mail is 16-gauge.
would that be SWG or AWG? Guessing no one will be sure about this, may take it to the national board.

So are you doing the period flat link wedge riveted? or Simple butted mail rings? If you do the rings, be careful that some don't come apart on you because they aren't very strong just butted together like that.
