Does leather armor have to be made out of real leather of can it be a rubber fake leather material?

5.2.1. Metal armor may be made of iron, steel, bronze, brass, copper or titanium. Aluminum and other modern alloys are not allowed, with the exception of titanium. 5.4. Armor may not be constructed of plastic or other non-period materials
only allowable items for armor are the metals listed and leather. sorry

one answer might be to use this leather-like material and studd/scale it with some metal, like ringmail, but you could use regular fabric if you wanted to go with studded/scaled armor

I'll have my chain back today so I"m not that worried. I've just had this fake leather stuff for a while now, and was wondering if I could use it.

I have a "pleather" tunic that I ware occationally. It looks nice, but it can't count as armor. So It's not like you can't ware it or use it. Just not for Armor.
