It was a beautiful day and life at the Eastern Port Hub was busy as ever. Among the merchants trying to sell their stuff to the servants of samurai and peasants alike, two samurai wearing the color and mon of the Mantis, are seen walking toward the local temple of Osana- Wo. One was Yoritomo Tsukasa and the other was Tsuruchi Senzeo. Both are well known Mantis magistrates. When they got there, they could see that the monks in charge of taking care of the temple have been slaughtered and the koku has been taken.
“May Osana Wo’s anger and vengeance rain down on whoever did this.” Tsukasa cursed in anger.
“Tsukasa-san, the etas are here to take care of the bodies and we have a few who witness a group of men leaving the temple.”
After getting the witnesses’ testimony, they headed toward Otosan Uchi. When they reached the outskirts of the former capital of Rokugan. The notice that the bandits spit up into two groups.
“Senzo-san, you follow the tracks to the right. I will follow the ones to the left.”
“Yes Tsukasa-san. May the fortunes smile upon you today.”
“You too my friend.”
Both men went their separate ways. Tsukasa saw his target about a 100 yards ahead of him. Three of the bandits where running through the heart of Otosan Uchi. Tsukasa gave chase. As he started to close in on them a strange fog started to roll in. The fog grew so think that Tsukasa could see more the six inches in front of his face. Tsukasa stumbled around in the fog for what seemed like hours. He started to see a clearing . As he continued to walk toward the clearing, the fog started to clear. Tsukasa didn’t recognize his surroundings. He saw a town up head.
As he entered the town, he noticed that everyone was wearing gaijin gear. He continues to walk through the town till he comes up to the local tavern. Tsukasa enters the tavern and decides to go and try to gather some information from the bar tender.
The bar tender spotted Tsukasa walking up. “ What can I get for you sir?”
“Sake.” Tsukasa responded. The bar tender gives him a confused look.
“All I really need is some information.” Tsukasa said with some disgust.
“Oh, why didn’t you say so to begin with. What can I do for you?” the bar tender takes a rag and cleans the table.
“Where am I?” Tsukasa asked, the gaijin lands and customs have troubled him much since arriving here.
“You are in the Land between Lands, and in the realm of Mittelmarch.” The bar tender responded.
“How did I get here, and how do I get back to Rokugan?” Tsukasa asked.
“I suppose the fog brought you here. As for how to get back to Rokugan? I don’t know. We have had many of people come to Mittelmarch, but none have returned to their original homes.”
Tsukasa sit there for a moment and weigh his choices. He will wear the colors of the Mantis proudly, but he will take on the life style of a ronin till he can find a family that shares his sense of duty, justice and honor. He also has decides to complete his duty to his original clan, and makes sure the bandit are brought to justice.
