Where can you get the foam to make stabbing tips, and what is it called? Also, Zaron, what kind of tape do you use on the handles?

It's computer packing foam, and I need to find out where to buy some. Actually, you can get away with using blue foam and couch foam, but it's difficult and it won't last long. I got a few stabbing tips and arrows to pass that way at Ragnarok.

I either use hockey grip tape, cloth tape, or for nicer weapons I use the leather bat grip self adheasive leather.

Hey, that was a veryyyyyyyyyyyy close guess.... good one too. Actually it was a trick question. The year Dhugal and I went to Winter Wolf, all the guys were hanging out in Oron's basement. At the time, Dhugal was actually using black electrical tape. Finn said hey you are going to lose your grip on that sword and haphazardly stuck some grip tape on it. Of course Dhugal being Dhugal had to take it apart and rewrap it "properly". So, in reality noone "taught" Dhugal how to use it, they just gave him a good idea.

hehehe... A little more to the story... Finn was adamant that I would lose my grip, even though I had years experience and had never lost an electrical tape gripped weapon. One thing I learned from it all was that grip tape needs replacing alot less than electrical tape does... that's really the main reason I use it now. I usually would go through 4 or 5 grips per season when I used electrical tape. I still have the mace that I started using grip tape on, but am in the process of re-flanging it. So far it has lasted since March of '03 and I decided to rebuild it after Equinox last year, once it is done we shall see how long it lasts.

Has anyone found out yet? I was told to use the High Density green foam from Joann's, any other suggestions?

That's the best stuff to start out with. It's sturdier than the White foam from JoAnn, and not terribly expensive.
After you become the bomb-diggity at foamsmithing, you can step it up and use the good stuff from McMaster-Carr.

Fabric store should carry Open-celled foam, usually in the back. Along with an array of other things that can be used for dag weapons like, Poly-Fill For rocks, and a nice selection of Magenta, Violet, and Turquoise... :-P

Tynan's foam is good, but it's narrow across the top, so it only works for stabbing tips, arrows, and javelins. If you want to use grey foam for a shield, I'd avoid Tynan's foam because you'd have seams, which isn't a good thing.

Actually the type we got was in big rectangles. about 6 to 8" by 6 to 8" and about 2' long. You'd still have to cut them for shields, so not the best though.

I'd like to use some of that open-celled foam if you still have it, Zaron.
