Rag XXV

I realized yesterday that there are potentially a lot of people that have never been to Ragnarok before, or people who have been before but might still consider themselves new to the experience attending this year. These are just a few things I know of to keep in mind the week before Ragnarok and as you're getting ready for the event.
1. Bring a photo ID. If you do not have a state issued photo ID, bring your birth cert. and a school ID or work ID.. anything to match a name to a face, and it should be fine. (Please, don't loose your paperwork. Keep everything locked in your car where it will stay safe and dry.)
2. Bring a printed copy of your registration if you pre-regged! A lot of things can go wrong with 600 something people going through pre-reg, so you may need to verify you have paid for registration, or you might have to pay again.
3. Make camping plans before you get to Ragnarok. Although it may not be as much of a problem this year, camps may not have space for everyone who did not pre-reg.
4. After 6pm each night, everyone, even if you are just drinking water, must have a period container to drink from. As far as I understand, this is a Ragnarok rule. (Goodwill has some great period-looking containers for cheap, or you can buy one from the merchants there for fairly reasonable prices.)
5. Everyone needs to respect those camping around you and clean up after themselves daily; trash, belongings ect. Follow the rules of your camp master and respect the people you camp or beside. If your things are left out, they can/will get thrown away, or they are free game!
6. You will need to drink TONS of water. Be prepared to purchase more water WHEN you run out.
7. Bring a change of mundane clothes to keep in the car. Keep them in a trash bag to keep them clean and dry for the trip home, or a trip to town when all of your other things are wet.
8. Bring extra money. If you're camping with a large group, always try to pitch in on food or bring your own. No one is going to feed you everyday, and you'll need more than PB&J all week long. If you go with someone to Rag or leave Rag for a trip to town, try to pitch in on gas if you can, even if it's $5.
9. Make sure you have weapons or weapons supplies to fall back on. Your favorite weapon may not pass, and it wouldn't be fun to go all the way to Rag just watch everyone else fight.
10. Showers are necessary; If you don’t think so, 2 days at Rag will make you change your mind, then you’ll WISH you had shower supplies. If you plan on taking a dip in the swimming pond, you'll want to shower off then too, just realize your white trunks might not be white anymore.
11. If it’s your average Ragnarok, it WILL RAIN, and it WILL BE HOT. Plan accordingly for ANY form of weather the entire week. Have garb that can be layered, and be prepared to get wet WHEN it rains. (*Leave a clean set of mundane clothes in the car for the ride home where they’ll stay dry.) Keep your garb in trash bags if you think your tent could flood, or line the bottom of your bags with them just in case.
12. If you’re having trouble finding period.. anything, try looking in consignment shops, secondhand stores, flea markets and yard sales for jewelry, feasting gear, camping items and costuming. Period stuff often ends up in these places at low prices. They are also great sources for wooden bowls, mugs, goblets and other feasting gear.
13. Don’t panic if you forget anything! There is a wal-mart just down the road, and there is always someone running to town who you can hitch a ride with if you rode with a group. *Personally, I recommend you buy things like food and water after you get to Rag, or anything else that you know you have to buy for the week. It'll save you space on the way there, and time by not packing it. Also, you can help your neighbors if they’ve forgotten something important that you have. Sharing is both noble and generous, and makes any campsite better.
14. Speaking of being generous, try to be courteous and pack your stuff nicely and compact for the trip there and back. It'll save from a mess and create more space for the other five people in the car with you.
Yea, I guess that’s it.
If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask! These are the links from the old Ragnarok page if you think they may be of use, and the current Rag site is listed as a hyperlink above.

*If you are under 18: for Ragnarok at Coopers Lake, you need your legal guardian to accompany you to Ragnarok for the entire week. Temporary guardianship will not be honored.
Good luck packing everyone!

1) Sunday. 2) You'll already be here for the Dragoon Campout. 3) SUNDAY! 4) ...Just kidding! :] Can't wait, it will be a blast!

I met Aroodo first. He lived up the street from me in Newburgh (Fangorn), showed me and a few neighborhood kids a few things one night, and I never left.
Personally, I think one of the best ways to get people involved is by word of mouth. Encouraging our friends who already play to tell others who might have an interest is a great start. I never thought I would end up swinging foam sticks around and actually take it seriously; you might be surprised who you talk to and who might be interested. A flier can only have so many words on a page, so just talking about it and spreading the word that way is a great way to start.
Other than that, I agree with Oof. College campuses, game stores, or even book stores would be good places to try. Fliers with numbers to contact yourself, a link to the Mittelmarch boards, or the main Dagorhir website would be great references.
I would make sure that if you do go around posting fliers everywhere, make it known that it's not just around Indianapolis. Someone that might see a flier may think it's a local group or a club, when in reality there are locations all over the place. Recruiting for our own realm is great, but if people understood how big Dag really was, they might be more interested. Good Luck :]
*This weekend at BSU was great recruitment for the new realm. As soon as the other students there saw a bunch of weirdos with foam sticks having a good time, they all wanted to jump in. You just gotta make it fun!

The Chronicles of Tári Tinehtelë The log beneath her breaking with age, Tári Tinehtelë sat alone near the forest's edge. She held a blade in her left hand and a stone in her right, stripping the history from her steel. Her eyes flickered as sparks ran between her blade and the stone, erasing the scars of battle. There were no voices. No footsteps. The only sound in existence was her striking steel.
She wished she could force herself to leave this forgotten place. Every day she waited for a friend to return or a sign from the past, but every night she would admit there was nothing for her here, nothing left behind from the friends and memories that made this forest her home. And still, through all the battles she survived, all the places she went and the faces she met never kept her away from the Fangorn woods. She would always return with a hopeful heart, and refused to accept the forest she loved was now a forgotten wasteland.
A sudden roaring laughter came from the ground floor of the Green Dragon Inn. Tari continued the pace on her blade, suppressing the hopeful jolt that rose in her chest. These voices were the same she heard every night, but never were comforting in her silence. Although the village of CrannMeigeall remained populated, she felt no comfort from these traveling strangers. Her timeless friends that once dwelled in these trees were gone, and nothing would bring them back.
Tari pushed her weight against the tree beneath her then got to her feet, strapping her blade to her waist and dropping her stone in the pouch on her belt. The sun was falling in the distance; now the most prominent light came from the open door of the Inn. She turned down the path to village, blindly following the village lamps.
She passed the stable as she walked and mindlessly extended her hand to the ash-white beauty in the last containment unit. Amras shoved his nose playfully into her grasp, filling Tari’s hand with warmth. She smiled at her only companion, then opened the gate and let him walk from his cell without her guidance. She grabbed the bundle of straps from their hook and turned to leave the barn, her faithful stallion following her steps on his own accord.
The voices became louder as she grew closer to the Inn. The door stood ajar, the lantern lights gleaming into the outside darkness. The voices stopped as she walked by, and the young, flawed male faces glanced in her direction as she passed. Their eyes traced her strong shoulders, the round perfection of her eyes, and finally the tips of her elfin ears. Tari felt a smirk escape her lips, but simply pulled the hood of her cloak around her face in response.
The city path stopped short but Tari headed straight into the trees, Amras keeping pace. Her stride was slow this time, embracing the taste of the wind and the scent of the earth, letting her memories consume her conscious thought. A sudden smile crossed her face as she remembered the first time she appeared in these woods. She had the fleeting image of a road-dusted and travel-worn elf climbing through the open window of a store room in the attempt to the escape the cold, only to crash into an upturned barrel and wake the entire Inn. Tari laughed in the darkness, recalling the fear in her heart as the store room door opened with a jerk, the brilliant shine of Sita’s blade levitating inches from her face. The midnight intrusion quickly became a welcoming to her new home, her new life.
It had been four years to the day since she entered these woods. The life she had known would never be again, with age leaving it’s mark the village and locals raids turning half the city to ash. Perhaps that was why she remained when all others had gone; maybe she wanted there to always be something in these woods from that memorable time, as if holding on long enough would bring it back.
She placed her hand on Amras’ side to comfort her desolate mind as they walked through the trees, no goal or destination in sight. For miles it seemed they walked in the night. The village lights had long since disappeared, and Tari felt a surge of freedom with every step they took. The desire for adventure and the unknown rushed through her like the ocean tied. She kept her eyes forward, leading them onward to anywhere but where they had been.
Before she could comprehend her thoughts, she threw herself over Amras’ back and forced him into speed. The world flew by in a whirl of color. The wind was hard on her face, but it woke her senses and made her feel alive again. She searched for familiarity in the woods ahead, and pushed her steed faster as they raced through unknown territory. They road through the darkening night, never to return to the forest again, and pushed through the trees without a backward glance.
